             NEW YORK: The dollar fell sharply Tuesday, with the yen benefiting the most, after a drop in oil from a record high eased concern that economic growth will be constrained, especially in Japan.

"We've had oil coming off, and that's helped the yen," said Greg Anderson of ABN AMRO. "I wouldn't be surprised to see the yen head higher during the next week."

High oil prices tend to hurt the dollar, as the United States imports and consumes more oil than any other economy. But costlier oil also hits the euro and especially the yen, as Japan imports all its oil.

In late trading, the euro rose to $1.2517 from $1.2504 on Monday. The dollar fell to ¥108.415 from ¥109.275 and to 1.2297 Swiss francs from 1.2304 francs.The pound rose to $1.8050 from $1.8000.

"It's an oil story," said Michael Malpede, senior currency analyst in Chicago at Refco Group, the biggest futures broker on regulated markets. "As the rally in crude oil prices stalled, the yen started to rebound."
