How many centimetres in an inch – another way of looking at it
If you know that there are 2.54 centimeters you can deduce that there are 0.39 inches in a centimetre by dividing 1 by 2.54. There is an interesting twist of history about this. Originally, one centimeter was defined equal to 0.3937 inches. However for the sake of simplicity, the definition was changed and an inch was defined as exactly equal to 2.54 centimeters. The calculation used to be 0.3937 x 2.54 = 0.999998, the inch was made 0.000002 shorter so that the resultant figure became 1 instead of 0.999998.
