                               How the calorie calculator works and what is the calorie intake formula

This calorie intake calculator is based upon the popular Harris Benedict Equation, which uses two important inputs to calculate daily calorie needs namely :

1. The BMR (basal metabolic rate) of the individual
2. The daily amount of activity performed by the individual

Using the above two factors, the calorie intake calculator multiplies a certain avtivity factor into the BMR based upon the level of activity. According to the Harris Benedict Equation, the activity factor is multiplied to the BMR according to the following activity levels:

Little or no exercise. The calorie calculator multiplies BMR x 1.2
Light exercise 1-3 days/week. The calorie calculator multiplies BMR x 1.375
Moderate exercise 3-5 days/week The calorie calculator multiplies BMR x 1.55
Hard exercise 6-7 days a week. The calorie calculator multiplies BMR x 1.725
Very hard exercise & physical job. The calorie calculator multiplies BMR x 1.9
Very hard exercise twice a day. The calorie calculator multiplies BMR x 1.9

The calorie intake calculator is also loosely refered to as a calorie burn calculator since it calculates the amount of calories burned each day based upon an individuals activity level. This calorie intake calculator is very accurate apart from one scenario which is not fully accomodated in the Harris Benedict Equation namely, very lean individuals. It is a well known fact that people who are very lean (muscular) need more calories, so the calorie calculator will under-estimate calorie needs of such individuals.
