What is Anorexia and what does it mean to have an Anorexic BMI

A person with anorexia nervosa deliberately loses weight. The disorder can lead to a condition where the anorexic patient loses so much weight that it becomes life threatening. The common ways to become anorexic are forced vomiting, taking laxatives or diuretics, excessive exercise to loose body weight and taking appetite suppressant drugs that kill the feeling of hunger in the body.

The main signs of anorexia are deliberate attempts to loose weight and a feeling of being overweight. In many cases the anorexic man or woman is actually under weight, but still believes that the body weight is too much and carries on taking measures to reduce body fat leading to a resultant drop in BMI.

What are the main causes of anorexia nervosa?

It is still not fully clear why people resort to deliberate weight loss, but the following factors have been strongly correlated with people resorting to anorexic behavior:

1. A fear of getting fat
2. Poor self esteem
3. Trying to look beautiful
4. Trying to achieve perfectionism
5. Genetic factors (it has been proven that there is a 50% chance of twins both being anorexic)
6. Problem dealing with complex emotions
